Keralas Monsoon Season: What to Pack and Where to Go
June to September is Kerala’s monsoon, and while it’s not the season most travellers picture, it’s genuinely one of the best times to see the backwaters and hills at their most dramatic.
What to pack
- A proper rain shell rather than an umbrella — winds pick up on open backwater stretches
- Quick-dry clothing; nothing dries fast in the humidity
- Waterproof phone pouch for houseboat and hill journeys
Where it works best
Munnar and Thekkady both look their best under monsoon cloud, and Kumarakom’s backwaters swell to their fullest. Ayurveda retreats also run on their traditional monsoon-season schedule, considered the ideal time for treatment in classical texts.
