A First-Timers Guide to Houseboats on the Alleppey Backwaters

The word "houseboat" undersells it. A kettuvallam on the Alleppey backwaters is a slow-moving verandah — you sit under a thatched roof while paddy fields, coconut groves and village life drift past at not much more than walking pace.

Boarding and timing

Most houseboats board between 12 and 1pm and dock for the night around 6pm, usually near a quiet stretch of canal rather than a town. You’ll cruise for two to three hours before mooring, so the first afternoon is the scenic part — keep your camera out.

What’s actually on board

  • A crew of two to three: a captain, a helper, and usually a cook
  • An attached bathroom in every bedroom on 4★ boats
  • Meals cooked fresh on board — expect karimeen (pearl spot fish), appam and a proper Kerala thali for lunch

There’s no wifi and patchy signal for most of the route, which is very much the point. Bring a book, or just watch the shore.

Best time to book one

December through February brings the coolest, clearest afternoons. July and August turn the backwaters a deeper green after the monsoon, but expect brief downpours.
