A Travellers Guide to Kerala Ayurveda Retreats

Kerala is where Ayurveda is still practised as it was documented centuries ago, and a proper retreat looks quite different from a hotel spa menu.

What to expect

A physician consultation comes first, usually on arrival, to assess your constitution (dosha) before any treatment is prescribed. Programmes typically run 7, 14 or 21 days — anything shorter is closer to a relaxation package than a treatment course.

Diet is part of the programme

Meals are prescribed alongside treatments, usually vegetarian, mild, and timed around your therapy schedule rather than a standard restaurant clock.

Choosing a genuine centre

Look for centres registered with Kerala’s Department of Tourism under the green-leaf Ayurveda certification, which confirms a licensed physician oversees the programme.
